RDA Traces its origin from PADETC. In 1980 what today is called PADETC (Participatory Development Training Centre) was known as Rice-based Integrated Farming System (RIFS). That time, RIFS focused on food security for poor rural communities in the aftermath of the war. In 1996, RIFS changed name to PADETC becoming an indigenous, all-Lao organization committed to making a unique and distinctive contribution to the development of Lao PDR. PADETC used a centers-based approach in its work that saw the emergence of 6 centers that, well groomed by PADETC and some have already become semi-autonomous organisations and SuanMaiLao Eco-Forest Learning Center (SML) inclusive. SML only focused on educating young people and the general public on the importance of ecology in relation to holistic education and development.
Today, like PADETC, SuanMaiLao Eco-Forest Learning Center (SML) also changed name to Rural Development Agency (RDA) a Lao based Non-Profit Agency founded in 2009 as a PADETC Organization but this time with an expanded mandates and believes. RDA has extensive experience and networks within the Lao communities and working with young people, communities, local authorities and village functionalities in promoting sustainable and inclusive community development in Laos. RDA believes communities have abilities to be self-sustaining when their capacity, confidence, networking and dialogue for longer term community led empowering development programmes are initiated.
